Picking up on your sword in the stone analogy, Guy's programme highlights how the alchemy of Hallelujah between performer and listener is such that we can each find our own king or queen to release the song.

It's a marvellous bit of magic from the genius of Leonard Cohen whose pen IS mightier than the sword.

best, Dean

Your point about the use of pronouns is spot on; I would add only that the pronoun shifts between first and second person and the exceedingly rare use of the collective pronoun, "we," serve to sustain the tension as well as manifest both the painful impossibility of fully knowing ones partner in a dyad and the ecstasy of bonding, even transiently, in spite of the consequent risk.

"There was a time you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah"

Also, BBC Radio programs are available for 7 days after broadcast. The direct link to the replay of the Hallelujah documentary is http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00f928x/The_Fourth_The_Fifth_The_Minor_Fall/

Very interesting and enjoyable analyses. Thank you.

I agree especially agree with the ideas about sexuality and gender perspectives.

While I don't share the same favorite(s) as you, the BBC program has opened me to appreciate how there really is a version of this song for everyone.
